Studio Rules
General rules
- Never let anyone inside the building under any circumstance. We have a number posted on the door if they need to be let inside.
- Report any leaks, fires, electrical hazards, or otherwise to us immediately!
- Do not lend your access code out.
- Always firmly shut the door behind you when entering & leaving the studio. It's a old building, and the door doesn't shut on its own.
- Do no unlock or use the backdoor.
- Do not move any stationary equipment.
- Do not climb any shelves.
- Do not prop open any doors.
- Do not attempt to set the thermostat on the air conditioners.
- No smoking/vaping indoors.
- Shoes are always required.
- Unless alone, do not play any music aloud.
- Do not leave the water running for extended periods of time.
- Report any bathroom discrepancies immediately.
- For the safety of other members and yourself, please mop up any spills that
may occur in the studio. If you mop the floor, use a wet floor sign
afterward. - Do not throw any clay onto the ground while throwing, please use a bucket.
Equipment rules
All equipment must be cleaned after use (LEAVE IT AS YOU FOUND IT OR BETTER), this includes:
- Pottery wheels
- Clay extruders
- Hand tools
- Slab roller
- Water buckets
- Glaze mixing drill bit
Food and Drink are not allowed at any station except the large shared workspace tables.
High
output heat guns are prohibited from use in the studio. They are
typically metal shielded on the end, and get up to 400 degrees.
Item creation & storage
- Do not pick up anyone else's work in the studio. We have a zero tolerance policy to this rule.
- All items must have your 3 initials on the bottom for identification or a makers mark that we will keep on file.
- Green-ware & Stoneware ready to be bisque/glaze fired will need to be placed
on the appropriately labelled shelf in the back next to the lockers. - All items that have finished firing will be placed on a collection shelf
that is labeled. If you do not pick up your pieces before the end of the month, they will be discarded to make room for more items. - Lockers are only to be used for aprons, clay, personal tools, etc. Please do not store perishable food/drugs/liquids.
- Label your cubby space, locker, and wear board with your full first and last name. No nicknames please. There is a label maker on the equipment shelf.
Cleaning
The studio is mopped and cleaned every week, but please help us out by cleaning any messes that may happen while you work.
If you see a massive spill, a trash can overflowing, or a bathroom
catastrophy... Please contact us immediately so we can fix it.
Please help us take care of the studio and clean up after yourself so the next person doesn't have to!
Kilns
- Under no circumstance is any member allowed to operate, open, or look inside
the kiln at any time. We fire up to 2200 degrees, and radiant heat is often invisible. You can seriously injure yourself or others by attempting to open the kiln. - Kiln firings are done twice a week minimum, with additional firings done when there is over abundance of items.
- Your items will not be fired if there aren't visible initials/makers mark on the piece.
- Your items will also not be fired if the bottoms are not wiped clean of glaze due to the kiln damage it can potentially cause.
- We only fire items with cone 5/6 glazes/clays. If you slip in a item made of a different firing material without our knowledge, you will be liable for any damages, and your membership will be terminated immediately.
- Touching the kiln under any circumstance will immediately terminate your membership, please do not touch the kiln.
Clay
Clay can be purchased by grabbing whichever clay you want off the clay shelf in the back area, scanning the QR code, and checking out on your mobile device. If for some reason you cannot check out or if the website is down, just give us a call.
Sometimes we stock different clays, but all the clays we stock will be cone 5/6.
Any clay left out will be disposed of. You either take it home or put it in your locker!
You can wash off any dirty equipment in the main sink, as it filters most clay out easily. Do not put any clay down the bathroom sink as it does not have a filter.
Glazing
- Underglazes & Stoneware glazes must be poured out of the container onto paint
palettes when used. Do not directly dip pieces or brushes into the brush
glaze or underglaze containers. - Bucket glazes must be mixed with the drill + attachment.
- You must rinse the drill mixing attachment when moving from a different
bucket dip glaze to another. The white rinse bucket must also be cleaned
once you are finished. It must always have clear water in it before and after use. - Close all buckets when finished dip glazing (leaving them open will ruin the batch)
- Ensure that all under-glazes are sealed when returning them back to the equipment cabinet
- Do not add any water or other material to the bucket glazes
- Bottoms of all items glazes must be wiped clean or they will not be fired.
- If you use a flux glaze, you must provide your own kiln cookie.
Membership dues & studio access
You must have your membership dues paid for within 7 days of receiving a bill.
If your invoice remains unpaid, and we cannot contact you:
-Your locker will be cleared out
-Your clay will be reclaimed into house clay for use
-All work in the studio will be discarded.
Unfortunately we do not have the space or time to keep track of member items if they
lapse their membership without contacting us.
You are free to cancel your membership at anytime. If you cancel your annual membership, then you will be refunded for the remaining months, but previous months will be charged as if it were monthly memberships. This is to ensure the annual membership discount only applies to those who finish one full year under that subscription.
Student studio access
You have 10 weeks of access when taking a 8 week class. The final two weeks are to allow you to finish up work (note: not to start new work).
We highly advise you do not make any new pieces on the wheel by your final class session.
If you are at the end of week 9 and have pieces that need to be bisque fired, we cannot guarantee they will make it, and will be discarded once your access ends.
If you are waiting for stoneware to be glaze fired at week 10, it is your responsibility to come and pick them up the following week or so after. We will not discard them for up to a month typically.
If you sign up for another class, you need not worry about the 10 week rule, and simply keep enjoying the studio as usual, as your access will not end in between classes.
